✨ Future/s and Overcoming Violence: Minor Religion, Postidentity, and Becoming

(Co-sponsored by the Women’s Caucus – International Section & CARV)

In response to the 2026 presidential theme Future/s, this session explores how scholars of religion and violence can move beyond identity-centered frameworks that dominate both academic and public conversations.

Rather than treating religion primarily through fixed identities (e.g., minority rights or recognition), this session proposes thinking through “the minor”—a critical approach emphasizing disidentification, transformation, and becoming. We invite proposals that examine how violence is produced, justified, resisted, and reimagined across religious and secular contexts.

Bringing feminist, queer, and postcolonial theory into conversation with CARV’s focus on structural and epistemic violence, the session asks:

🌍 What futures can religious studies imagine beyond identity management?

🔎 How might “minor religion” open new ways to rethink violence and transformation?

📩 Questions are welcome—we look forward to seeing your ideas!
